Lawyer of jailed Greek mob boss now in custody

The lawyer of jailed Greek mob boss Panagiotis Vlastos and another defendant from the group of five who testified before an anti-corruption examining magistrate on Wednesday on their role in the extortion ring, were apparently remanded in custody.

According to a dispatch from the state news agency, Vlastos' female lawyer is charged with playing an active role in the criminal organisation that had its headquarters in Korydallos Prisonand, also, faces felony charges for murder, attempted murder, and for being an accomplice to bombings, among others.

A female cousin of Vlastos, says the same report, that allegedly gave information to the police on the actions of this mafia syndicate, allowed it to be understood that lawyer was having an affair with her jailed client and is involved in trafficking money from the criminal organisation's activities.

Sources say that in her testimony, the lawyer said Vlastos' cousin implicated her in the case intentionally to get revenge because she had turned down her proposal to take on her defence in the trial on Vlastos' attempted escape from Trikala Prison.

She also denied that she had an affair with the inmate or that she had anything to do with the trafficking of illegal money. In her deposition, she allegedly told the examining magistrate that she met Vlastos two years ago when she was court-appointed to represent him.

The second defendant, who was also held on remand, is accused of being a member of the criminal organisation and of violating laws on explosives.

The other three defendants, including another woman, were released with the condition that they will appear in a police station on a regular basis and were banned from leaving the country.

One of them, a police officer, had to post a 1,000-euro bail in order to be released. The police officer allegedly had accepted a mobile phone as a gift from Vlastos delivered to him at his house by a woman.

The young woman, a friend of a former lover of Vlastos, was allegedly the one who took helicopter pilot lessons with the inmate's expenses. According to sources, the woman in her testimony denied everything attributed to her and said that she could not refuse what her friend was asking her to do because she feared Vlastos.

She also said that when she realised that her friend's and Vlastos' intention was to use her when she would have a helicopter pilot license she intentionally failed the exams.
