Greek Ski Slopes Give Int'l Ones A Run For Their Money!

Greece is not just a summer retreat, it is a nation that can offer visitors wonderful activities all year long. Although the Swiss Alps are obviously number one for European skiers, Greece's slopes are nonetheless giving Switzerland a run for the money. The snow may be wetter than some would expect, and obviously snow-making is limited, but the ski season in Greece -which generally runs from December to April- offers enthusiasts the enviable attractions of stellar views, endless sun, and excellent winter sports options. Currently there are more than 20 ski resorts operating in Greece, most of which are small -as opposed to others in Europe- but there are still quite a few operations that offer really challenging trails, ski lessons, rental equipment shops, skiing by night and cosy lodges.

Tips for Skiers:
  • Budget - A budget 10-15 euros is usually needed in order to rent boots/skis/poles. About 20 euros per day is needed for snowboard rentals and ski lessons usually run from 25-30 euros per hour.
  • Driving Safely - Make sure your automobile either has winter tiers on, or do not leave home without car chains. They are mandatory!!!!
  • Direct Bus Routes - Klaoudatos ski buses (Athens tel. 30-210-5781880 and Thessaloniki tel.30-2310-264163) are available between Athens and Parnassos, Kalavrita, and Mainalo and between Thessaloniki and Seli and Elatohori.
  • Contact - Contacting the ski center of your choice is best before setting out. Many (but not all) are open only on weekends and holidays. A good place to start would be to visit www.snowreport.gr for info, snowcam photos, and weather updates;
Here is a sample map of the mountains, ski resorts with the lifts and slopes.
