First 6 suspects in mafia extortion ring released on bail

The ex-wife of convicted crime boss Panagiotis Vlastos, Ioanna Chira, was released on bail on Monday for 50,000 euros after testifying in relation to the extortion ring that operated from within the Korydallos prison. According to reports, the other five suspects that also testified, including the parents of crime boss Yannis Skaftouros, were also set free.

Chira, believed to be one of the masterminds in this dangerous extortion ring, apparently denied any involvement in criminal activities. Asked why she held a large sum of money at her home, she explained that the cash sum of 332,000 euros -which was discovered by officials- was from the sale of a plot of land that once belonged to Vlastos’ father and as such and therefore did not derive from criminal activities.
"I divorced Vlastos four years ago. We do not have any relation. I refuse any involvement," she claimed. As for the amount of the 332,000 euros found in her house, she explained "it comes from the sale of two properties that belonged to Vlastos' father and is not a product of criminal activity."
Meanwhile, the 70-year-old father of Skaftouros also denied the charges against him and his wife and argued that he supported himself by raising goats and sheep. While he was giving his deposition to the Greek prosecution, the father lamented how he had the misfortune of his children turning to crime at the age of 35 and now he visits them in prison in his ripe old age.

And if that wasn't enough, former PASOK Minister of National Defense Akis Tsohatzopoulos also denied any involvement in the criminal organization.

It should be reminded that various media reports are insisting that Tsohatzopoulos is involved in the bomb attacks against the former general secretary (and his one time friend) Yannis Sbokos.

It should be reminded that Tsochatzopoulos is already serving a sentence for his involvement in the defense procurement kickbacks and money-laundering case, attributed his involvement in the so-called "godfathers' ring" to political interests.
