Prime Minister Antonis Samaras announced a sweeping cabinet reshuffle on Monday, replacing 10 out of 18 ministers, according to newly appointed government spokesman Sofia Voultepsi. There are a few surprises but certainly the replacement of Yiannis Stournaras with Gikas Hardouvelis (another technocrat and protege of Costas Simitis and Lucas Papadimos) was quite a surprise.
Hardouvelis, 58, was, until his appointment, a Professor of Finance & Economics at University of Piraeus -at the Department of Banking and Financial Management- as well as a Chief Economist and Director of Research at the EUROBANK Group.
Specifically, Hardouvelis was Director of the Economic Office of Prime Ministers Costas Simitis (1996-2000) and Lucas Papademos (2011-2012). When serving under Simitis, he was also Chief Economist at the National Bank of Greece.
Before coming to Greece in 1993, Hardouvelis was Assistant Professor at Barnard College, Columbia University (1983-1989), Associate Professor and subsequently Full Professor at Rutgers University (1989-1993) and at one point he was also employed as a research Assistant at none other than the Federal Reserve of New York (1987-1993)
He apparently holds a B.A. and M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in Economics from UC Berkeley. In short, an all-American and pro-Germany boy...
In the new cabinet, eight ministers out of the former 18 ministers retained their positions. Moreover, 13 ministers are from the ruling conservative New Democracy party, while four are from the minor socialist coalition partner PASOK (including Andreas Loverdos and Angela Grekou - the latter of which could not even get elected in her local electoral region on Corfu).
Here are a few of the appointments made in the main Greek ministries:
