2 Arrested Over Shooting Of Migrant Farm Workers in Nea Manolada

Police officials in Ilia arrested two suspects in connection with the shooting of more than 30 Bangladeshi workers in the Nea Manolada area of the Peloponnese during a dispute over back pay on Wednesday. A report in Kathimerini, which was later also announced on SKAI television stated that officials are now looking for two more suspects who are connected to the case.

According to Kathimerini, the incident occurred when some 200 workers allegedly demanded six months’ worth of unpaid wages from their employer in the region of Ilia.

An argument then erupted with three Greek supervisors, one of whom fired at the migrants with a shotgun.

Local reports said that as many as 30 workers were injured in the incident, with several of them said to be in a critical condition on Wednesday night.

The incident was condemned by all the political parties in Greece, including the Golden Dawn party. On its part, the government said it was an "unprecedented and devastating" incident.
“The injuries suffered by protesting farm workers in Manolada are being condemned in the most absolute manner by the entirety of Greek society,” government spokesman Simos Kedikoglou said in a statement Thursday.
“This unprecedented and devastating act is alien to Greek morals and the reaction of the authorities will be swift and proper,” he added.
On his part, Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias issued a separate statement condemning the attack.
"Respect for the law is a fundamental obligation for all of us, but also a necessary condition for the country's economic revival," he added while criticizing cases of economic exploitation.
Meanwhile, activists (yes, of the George Soros sort) are exploiting the issue to the point of no return. They have already begun a campaign urging consumers to boycott Manolada strawberries. (They forget that this was an isolated incident, and cannot be used to punish all the other producers in the area).

Also, the Greek media has also exploited the incident. Isn't it strange that they turn a blind eye over the complaints from tens of thousands of Greeks in the private sector who are everyday exploited exactly in the same way from their employers, (or are not paid for months).

We condemn this act of violence here at HellasFrappe, but we also condemn closed minds. You cannot look at a situation from one side, you have to analyze it from every dimension. The real story here is not only the attack on the migrants, which SYRIZA and PASOK are baptizing as racial to create division between our society, the real story here is the employer who hired illegal workers from slave traders, or human traffickers, and who is just one example out of thousands of others that is never punished.

Instead of exploiting news stories on migrant attacks, and adding to the hate which is growing in our society -because the attacks on Greek nationals are never ever reported- it would be wise if the Greek media used some of that air time to also begin running stories on workers who have no rights in this country. And when we say workers, we mean ALL workers... Not just migrants.
