LIVE BLOGGING - Elections 2012

Our Live coverage of the 2012 Elections - With Live Blogging - Will Begin at 18:55 Greek Time. Please check in periodically to read up on the latest news. For now we have a few news briefs (and gossip) about what is happening around the country.

01:00 - end of the live blogging.

01:00 - George Karatzaferis' LAOS Party, and the Greek (Oikologoi) Party are not going to be able to enter parliament. With a good portion of the votes counted reports are claiming that it is going to be too difficult for them to be able to pass the 3 percent needed in order to enter parliament.

00:30 -  The official results from Singular Logic (and the Ministry of Interior) just said that with 25% of the votes counted the New Democracy party has gained 113 seats, SYRIZA 47 seats and PASOK 44 seats. The results are based on 2.208.150 Eligible Voters, with a Total Vote Count - 24,51 %, the Invalid Ballots So Far were 2,36 % of the vote and roughly 18.21% of the total votes went to a series of smaller parties that will not be able to get into parliament.

Parties that enter parliament
New Democracy - 20.67%  - and 113 seats
SYRIZA - 15.48 - and 47 seats
PASOK 14.36 - and 44  seats

Democratic Alliance - 2,67 % - does not enter parliament

00:00 - On the prospect of cooperating with the left-wing Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA), which looked set to come second in the elections, Kammenos noted that he had the same positions as SYRIZA on economic issues but differed on issues of foreign policy, illegal migration and relations with Turkey.

00:00 - The abstention rate during Sunday's general elections was close to a record-breaking 40 percent, according to estimates unveiled by the interior ministry. This is higher than in the three previous elections, with abstention recorded at 30 percent in 2009, 26 percent in 2007 and 24 percent in 2004.

00:00 - New Democracy (ND) party leader Antonis Samaras tabled a proposal, under two conditions, following the announcement of partial results of a general election held in the country the same day. The first condition, Samaras said, is for Greece to remain in the Eurozone and the second is the changing of the Memorandum's (bailout package) policies, "so as to have growth and relief for Greek society." Samaras said the policies implemented previously by PASOK have reached their limits as regards Greek society's endurance, charging that such policies did not include measures for growth, which he had repeatedly proposed, both in Greece and in Europe. "New Democracy party is emerging as the first party, something that increases its responsibilities, I understand the people's rage, but our party will not leave Greece ungoverned," Samaras added.

23:00 - Official results from Singular Logic (and the Ministry of Interior)

20:25 - Members from George Karatzaferis' LAOS party believe that they will be able to pass the 3 percent needed to enter parliament.

20:20 - Italy's "Repubblica": "The left wing passes the socialists. Neonazis to enter Parliament"

19:55 - The Independent Greek party is apparently very pleased about the results it achieved at these elections. It aimed for a double-digit number and from what it looks like they will achieve it, and according to a report on ALPHA channel they noted that they will not become part of a coalition government with the New Democracy and PASOK parties (or the parties that are in favor of the memorandums).

19:50 - The meeting at the PASOK headquarters just ended but a new meeting has been called for 10 pm.

19:35 - A meeting just ended at the ND party headquarters and according to reports the scenario that claimed that the ND party would call for a second round of elections to be held if a majority government was not formed seem to be dying out. It looks like Antonis Samaras will now be forced to form a coalition government. (We are afraid that our suspicion of Karatzaferis' little leak might just be coming true... - he had proposed Dimitris Avramopoulos as premier - let us hope we are wrong).

19:30 - PASOK Spokesman Fofi Gennimatas just said something peculiar. She said we should wait for the "real" election results... huh? Now why is that... hmmmmm

19:20 - Reporters on ALPHA channel are already pumping out their propaganda saying that Samaras will not be able to govern on his own... This was actually published by hellasfrappe over a week ago when George Karatzaferis from the LAOS party hinted that Dimitris Avramopoulos will be chosen as interim prime minister. We had also featured a similar story that was featured from the Slog, which also mentioned the name of Stavros Dimas.

19:00 - The first exit polls are in (source ANT1, MEGA, ALPHA) with 80% of the vote count from 120 polling stations around the country (statistical error is +1 or -1) and for now it looks line 9 parties will enter parliament:
ND - 17-20 percent
PASOK - 14 - 17 percent
SYRIZA - 15,5 - 18,5 percent
INDEPEND. Greeks - 10-12 percent
KKE - 7,5-9,5 percent
Golden dawn - 6 - 8 percent
Democratic Left  - 4.5-6,5 percent
Green party 3 percent
LAOS  2,5-3,5 percent

For now Dora Bakoyianni's Democratic Alliance will not enter parliament and either will Stefano Manos' Drasi - which are both averaging at 2 percent

17:55 - ND - Main opposition New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras is presently getting some rest at his home in the northern suburb of Kiffisia. At the same time he is mapping out his strategy with some of his closest associates and they are going over the results from some early exit polls.

17:50 - PASOK - The PASOK party is presently holding an emergency meeting at its headquarters on Ippocratus that is being chaired by its president Evangelos Venizelos. The situation is not good from what some sources say and that is why many PASOK officials will restrain from making appearances today up until the exit polls are announced, which is exactly at 19:00 Greek time.

15:55 - KKE & GOLDEN DAWN - Members from the "Golden Dawn" party got hot and heavy with members from the Greek Communist Party (KKE) today at a polling station on the island of Rhodes when one KKE member decided to tear down a poster of April 21 outside the specific polling station. Police officials were quickly called to the scene in order to brake up the argument. (April 21st marks the day when a coup d'état led by a group of colonels brought the junta to power in 1967). (parapolitika.gr)

15:00 - INDEPENDENT GREEKS - The Independent Greek party issued a complaint earlier in the day claiming that specific polling stations were not distributing their ballots to voters. In a press release they said that court representatives and members of electoral commissions were not giving voters their ballots at the polling station 534 (in Athens), the 1476 station (in Galatsi), the 2039 station (in Glyfada) and the 238 station in Koropi.
