Dozens of Greek embassies and consulates were apparently instructed on Friday to return any unallocated funds they have, via the tax services, a report from To Vima said. The report, quoting an official government document, claims that the overseas diplomatic authorities are called upon to return any unallocated funds and revenue from consular acts (such as issuing visas, proxies, etc) via the tax services.
The document, which To Vima claims it has, specifies that diplomatic authorities must return any unused funds that were intended for stationary, cleaning products etc for the next two months. The same report even notes that the collection of these funds has already begun and although a number of embassies and consulates generate considerable revenue from issuing tourist visas, there are no provisions to fund them, which may affect their operation.
Diplomats of course are quite concerned since this unprecedented government request has never happened before.
Editor's Note - The story is also dominating most Greek news portals.
