A statement released by the former Minister of National Defence (during the Pikramenos caretaker government), and honorary D / General Staff, General, Frangoulis Frangos raised quite a few eyebrows in Leftist circles on Wednesday since he clearly directed his letter to all of those who usually go against Greek national issues ahead of these Sunday's general elections. The statement clearly concerns, January 26th, or the day after the Greek general elections, and is a response to many candidates who are running with the main opposition SYRIZA party and who have on more than one occasion made quite a few unpatriotic statements regarding Greek national issues (the issue of FYROM, hydrocarbons, the issue of Thrace and Greek-Turkish relations).
The statement follows:
The statement follows:
"In view of the forthcoming parliamentary elections on January 25, I consider it imperative, and a necessity of national unity, to address the upcoming challenges of all of those who conspire against the integrity of the country and our nation.Article in Greek - Defencenet
The Greeks must stay united in these difficult times, seeking what unites them rather than what separates them.
I feel obligated to (only) support candidates who have democratic national characteristics and who believe in our fundamental values, beginning with faith in all that is Holy and the Blessed Greek race (in other words, those who support Greece and its traditional values and democracy).
As a Greek officer who swore allegiance of loyalty to the Constitution and Laws of the State, to my subordinates, without discrimination and personal likes or dislikes, I continue on the same path, with only the light of our Greece guiding me.
Ret. General Frangos Frangoulis
Honorary Chief of Staff
