Fanatic AEK Fans Threaten Mayor of N. Philadelphia, Attack Reporter

About 60 fanatic AEK fans appeared at the sanctification ceremony of the lake in Nea Philadelphia in Northern Athens which took place on Tuesday, while they hurled abuse and threats against local mayor Aris Vasilopoulos. The soccer hooligans intentionally wanted to interrupt the ceremony so they not only made serious threats against the mayor, but they also assaulted a local reporter and the head of the police forces.

Just a couple of weeks ago AEK fans also assaulted councilors at a municipal meeting.

As the threats escalated, the mayor eventually departed. The “demonstration”, which lasted about twenty minutes, was terminated over the controversial construction of a new soccer stadium for AEK, on the grounds of its former stadium.

The construction of the new stadium however is going to need to clear a number of trees from the adjacent forest, which has caused local residents to formally object to the stadium.
