Terrorist Group Revolutionary Struggle claims bomb attack at central Athens bank

Revolutionary Struggle at the weekend claimed responsibility for the car bombing of the central bank on April 10, in a 18,328-word statement that runs to 27 pages and which was posted on the (George Soros/leftist anarchist-backed) Athens Indymedia website last Friday. According to the Athens daily Eleftherotypia, the statement said that the car contained 75kg of ANFO (ammonium nitrate/fuel oil) explosive and that it was planted outside the Bank of Greece building that houses the office of the IMF's permanent representative to Greece, Wes McGrew.

The text said that the attack was in response to Greece's return to the international money markets (which occurred on the same day). The fact that it damaged a branch of Piraeus Bank on the other side of the street made the attack "even more successful".

The statement noted that the attack was "dedicated" to the memory of Lambros Foundas, a member of the group, who was shot dead in a gunfight with police in the southern the Athens suburb of Dafni on March 10th, 2010.

The text, which praised the "libertarian communist revolution" and "anarchy", was signed "Lambros Fountas Commando, Revolutionary Struggle".

Revolutionary Struggle is believed to be led by Nikos Maziotis and Panayiota (Paula) Roupa, both leading members of the Revolutionary Struggle. They were reported missing in July 2012 after serving 18 months in pretrial custody. They had been released from prison on strict conditions, including a ban on leaving the prefecture of Attica, after serving the maximum time on remand.

Police have offered 2 million Euro reward for information leading to the arrest and arraignment of both suspects.

Following the blast at the bank, media reports said police suspected Revolutionary Struggle involvement but also believed that a fugitive November 17 member, Christodoulos Xiros, may also have been to blame.

Revolutionary Struggle first emerged in 2003 with a bombing attack on an Athens courthouse complex. Since then this group has claimed responsibility for several car bomb attacks including one at the headquarters of Citibank in the northern Athens suburb of Kifisia in February 2009 and another at the Athens Stock Exchange in September of that year.
