Parliament Lifts Immunity From Kasidiaris Over Case Of Slap To Kanelli

It looks like the case over the historical slap by Golden Dawn spokesman Elias Kasidiaris to Greek Communist Party (KKE) MP Liana Kanelli during a live television morning show on Antenna TV in June, last year is finally going to trial. A total of 205 lawmakers backed withdrawing Kasidiaris’s immunity on Wednesday, with three voting against and one voting “present.”

Parallel to this, some 170 MPs voted in favor, with 32 voting against, and seven just saying they were present, over lifting the parliamentary immunity of New Democracy MP Michalis Tamilos. He now faces three separate court cases relating to non-payment of municipal dues to Greece’s state-run pension fund IKA while he served as mayor of Trikala.

Only parliament has the right to lift the immunity of lawmakers, a rule that Prime Minister Antonis Samaras pledged to change.
