From the "I care Therefore I share" campaign to the I did it just to fix my image therefore I cannot be bothered so throw it in the dumpster mode. Sadly, we are unfortunately still stuck with remnants of the George Papandreou era. Recently MEGA channel held a charity drive in order to collect food and clothing for the less fortunate. In order to do this, they commissioned Athens mayor George Kaminis. The channel promoted their sudden burst for philanthropy like there was no tomorrow, with TV ads and even live coverage of the event. Anyone in their right mind would want to applaud such an initiative right?
Well at first yes, but what happened after this is a total tragedy.
According to a report in the Dimokratia newspaper tens of hundreds of citizens answered their call and donated as much food, clothing and toys that they could at a booth that was set up in central Athens for this very purpose.
Nice for the cameras... but apparently that is all it was.
The article revealed that the food and clothing was not distributed to the less fortunate but was rather thrown in the garbage. According to the newspaper, Athens mayor George Kaminis -hand selected by Papandreou- is totally responsible for this decision.
On camera he gave a wonderful speech about solidarity, helping the poor and brotherhood, but off camera the situation is indeed very grave. A video which was on Friday uploaded on the olympia news site only comes to confirm the story in Dimokratia, which until today was refuted.
As seen in the video, a huge garbage bin with a mountain of items -probably donated at the aforementioned charity event- stands smack across the Athens city hall.
How disturbing and embarrassing is that?
Using the media to campaign that you are sincere... and then dumping the offerings of common citizens in the garbage because you did not do it to really help people but only to patch up your rotting public image.
The video -and evidence- speaks for itself...
No wonder Greek people are still suffering. Shame.
