The General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE) and the Civil Servants Confederation (ADEDY) called for a 24-hour nation-wide strike October 18 in order to protest against the government's plans to pass new austerity measures including spending cuts, tax increase and state-asset sales. PAME (The Movement for the Reorganisation of the Greek Communist Party) also supports the protest.

The Troika has demanded that the government make further slashes of 11.5 billion euros in budget costs over the next two years and some are already speculating that this will result in a new round of wage and pension cuts.
