Officials Shut Down Hotels For Employing Illegals, Discover Heavy Tax Fraud All Over Greece

When the state takes a positive step, we will always applaud it and when it takes decisions to slap a few people around who give out a negative image of Greece to the world (and the Troika) then we can only say Bravo!

Such initiatives (and measures) were taken this past week when the labour ministry apparently imposed a five-day closure on the hotel in Paros where a Pakistani illegal migrant, who was arrested and charged in the near-fatal head bashing of a 15-year-old girl last month, was illegally employed. The ministry said that securing legality in the labour market, the labour and social security rights of unemployed Greeks and of legal immigrants constitutes an immediate priority of its policy. In other words... if you hire an illegal immigrant, get ready to be slapped with a hefty fine!

The labor ministry added that the protection of healthy competition between businesses as well as the discouragement of the entry and stay in the country of illegal immigrants is being pursued.

Bravo for the effort, and bravo for slapping another hotel in the area with a similar reprimand.

Meanwhile, tax authorities said that tax-related delinquency in popular holiday destinations sky-rocketed this year, and have reached more than 55 percent!

Out of 4,067 checks that were carried out by the Financial Crimes Squad (SDOE) in routine inspections and which were carried out in several resorts between the periods of July 6-Aug. 19 a whopping 2,266 offenders were cited, and 31,237 violations were documented.

Interestingly, tax-related delinquency on the jet-set island of Mykonos reached an astronomical 64.5 percent; on Santorini 68.4 percent, on Paros-Antiparos 63.7 and on Naxos 73.9 percent.

Editor's Note - It's easy to always point the finger at the Troika for everything... but c'mon folks... hiring illegal immigrants and not paying your taxes is despicable! Shame on all of those who allow the world to characterize the general population as corrupt, when clearly it is a selected few. We applaud the state once again for adopting these measures and for unmasking the real crooks but this initiative should continue.
