Greece Replies To Turkish Reaction On Commemoration of Pontian Genocide

Foreign ministry spokesman Grigoris Delavekouras, referring to an announcement issued by the Turkish foreign ministry regarding events in memory of the Pontian genocide, stressed that "on May 19 Greeks honor the memory of their brothers, who suffered martyrdom in the Black Sea region. History cannot be written off, nor can it be re-written with announcements. It demands respect to enable us to build a future of peace."

Earlier in the week Turkey, which holds a firm position on this issue, and continues to this day to deny that a Pontion or Greek genocide ever existed, issued a harsh statement on the occasion of the commemorative events for the Pontion genocide on May 19. According to the statement Ankara said that the activities taking place in Greece on the occasion of the" alleged "day of remembrance of the Pontian (genocide), are nothing more than events which are based on assertions that are not consistent with historical reality. The statement even said that the events are in all reality morally problematic and are not based on scientific data.
