New Parliament MPs Sworn In

The deputies that were elected in the January 25 national polls were sworn in on Thursday morning, with MPs being able to choose between taking a religious and a civil oath. The religious part of the procedure was officiated by the Archbishop of Athens and all of Greece Ieronymus.

Following the blessing he wished all the parliamentarians wisdom and unity.

Deputies from SYRIZA and communist KKE, with the exception of Liana Kanelli, took a civil oath.

The only member of the government that was not present was Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis, as he is travelling abroad.

The composition of the new Parliament is as follows:

  • 149 SYRIZA deputies and 13 Independent Greeks (ANEL) deputies
  • 76 New Democracy MPs
  • 17 Golden Dawn MPs
  • 17 Potami deputies
  • 15 KKE deputies 
  • 13 PASOK MPs
