SYRIZA Minister Says She Will Close Migrant Detention Camps & Stop Police Operations

While the world concentrates on what will happen with the Greek economy, the Minister of Immigration Policy Tasia Christodoulopoulou said on Wednesday that she plans to put an end to the previous government's police operation which was designed to curb the flow of illegal immigration into Greece. At the same time she said that she was going to shut down migrant reception camps.

It should be reminded that the previous conservative government of Antonis Samaras had launched the "Xenios Zeus" program, which was criticized strongly by SYRIZA (as well as all other Leftist parties) in 2013, especially the Greek branch of George Soros' Human Rights Watch.

In an interview with news website left.gr, Christodoulopoulou noted that the so-called 'sweep operation' like the one of Xenios Zeus belongs to the past.
"Even more so since lately, most immigrants are war refugees. To those people we are obliged by international agreements to grant asylum and protection," she added.
She also stressed that the SYRIZA government has decided to shut down the immigrant detention centres that are spread across the country. and which house undocumented migrants that illegally entered into Greece.
"These camps are incompatible with humanitarianism, the rule of law, and any sense of reason," she said, adding that the government is considering alternative accommodation.
(Editor's Note - The ANEL party which is a junior partner to the coalition government has already stated that they will not support this initiative, but we here at HellasFrappe are afraid that the Left will allow this to pass anyway. Let us hope that logic prevails and that this ridiculous proposal gets scrapped. The last thing Greece needs is to become an open boarder to human traffic flows from the Middle East especially during a period when there is so much radicalism.)
