The historical bonds between Greece and Serbia were reaffirmed on November 9, during a meeting between visiting Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic and Hellenic Republic President Karolos Papoulias."The geopolitical balance in our wider region is still fragile. Greece and Serbia, are obliged to manifest solidarity in their critical national issues," said Papoulias.
During the same press conference, he also assured Nikolic of Greece’s support concerning Serbia’s accession to the EU. Papoulias further noted the substantial room for growth in the two countries' economic relations given that Greece is one of the three largest investors in Serbia.
On his part, Nikolic thanked Papoulias for his country’s support to the preservation of Serbia’s territorial integrity and European integration process and said that Athens could count on Belgrade’s help. Nikolic also held talks with Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and met with Parliament Speaker Evangelos Meimarakis, PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos, main opposition Radical Left Coalition (Syriza) leader Alexis Tsipras as well as business representatives.
On November 10, the Serbian President visited historic Serbian monuments in northern Greece and the Mt. Athos monastic community and wrapped up his visit on November 11 with a visit to the islet of Vido, off Corfu, to attend a memorial service at the cemetery of Serb soldiers.
