TIME MACHINE - Greece in the 1960s (rare VIDEOS)

In early 1960, Greece was experiencing financial woes, and bondholders were being pushed to settle their old loans as a pre-condition for entry into the EU. In the same year Cyprus drafted its first constitution. In the entertainment world, Magda Pasaloglou won the title of Miss Star Hellas and Aristotle Onassis divorced his wife. It was also the first year in what proved to be the Golden decade of Greek movies and the top movie that year was none other than Mantolena with Vougiouklaki and the hottest couple of course were none other than Marinella and Stelios Kazantzidis.

In early 1960, Greece was blocked from the international financial markets because of a significant amount of debt prior to the war. That year, the Americans stopped sending aid to the country and the UK and US began pushing bondholders to settle their old loans as a pre-condition for entry into the European Union. Funny how history repeats itself...

Across Europe, the "Golden Age of Europe" began. Youth culture, chemical drugs and protests, particularly the 1968 student strikes in Paris, France, women’s rights were also at the top of the list, as well as reform laws that were anti-homosexual.

With all of these facial changes, there was an underlying root to these inflorescence manifestations of the Golden Age.

What stands out above most areas of change in 1960’s Europe is the economic development of the states.

It was the outward growth of the economy that opened the way for certain areas to blossom beautifully, as well as to spread the weeds of discontent in other areas.

On August 16, 1960, Cyprus drafted its first constitution. after the country won its independence in 1959.  The constitution put methods in place to protect Turkish Cypriots, due to the restrictions placed in Article 6 of the document. That article ensures the Cypriot government has no right to discriminate against either Turkish or Greek Cypriots. The constitution also ensures, in Article 1, that the Vice-President of the country is a Turk and the President is a Greek. In 1964, however, the Cypriot government became dominated by Greeks.

In the entertainment world, Magda Pasaloglou won the title of Miss Star Hellas and Maria Callas was making a grand career on the international scene.

Callas' steamy love affair with Aristotle Onassis caused the latter to divorce his wife Tina that year.

One of the "hottest" love stories and couples that year was none other than Marinella and Stelios Kazantzidis who would perform and travel together.

Speaking of music, one of the most popular songs that year was "Thalassa Plateia" by rising star Aliki Vougiouklaki.

Her role in that movie "Mantolena" apparently received rave reviews and opened the road for golden decade in Greek film making.

The 60's emphasized a new youth culture, with the Beatles leading the growing pop music scene in the UK, followed by the Wast German music scene, while in France avant garde fashion came into the scene.

The trends that year, aside from sassy bathing suits was holding home parties. The aim was to dance a blues song with a significant other. The song of choice: Why the classic "Ti Eine Afto Pou To Lene Agapi".

All Greek cities began to embrace western culture, but rural Greece remained committed in maintaining deep rooted traditions. (Check the traditional Macedonia wedding documentary below).

And finally at the end of 1960 and in the beginning of 1961, Panathinakos won Olympiacos - for the Greek Cup - in what some describe was one of the most historic soccer games of all time  (Season 1960-61) ..
