The polar weather conditions that hit Greece earlier this week have transformed the roads and highways into ice rinks, while many schools will remain closed. Access to many villages on Cycladic islands such as Andros and Tinos have been blocked due to heavy snow, which in some areas exceeds 2 meters.
Similar problems, albeit to a lesser extent, are being reported for the islands of Naxos, Syros and in southern Evia.
In Attica schools in the northern and eastern districts remained closed, while the same holds true for many schools in Florina and Kastoria.
On the island of Crete some areas reported as much as a meter and a half of snow. The snowfall was so intense that the Fire Brigade was summoned to help many people who got trapped in their vehicles (especially near Lasitihi).
The heavy snow, combined with the unprecedented (for Greece) low temperatures are expected to continue throughout Thursday with specific areas in the northern area of the country and the islands suffering the most.
