A powerful explosive device that was accidentally discovered in the back yard of a residential home in Metamorfosi on Thursday morning has both stunned and puzzled police authorities.
A report in the To Vima online news service claims that the device was enclosed in a 30-liter plastic container, which (among other things) included some 20 kilos of explosives (possibly ammonium dynamite), three detonators as well as two pieces of a fuse wire.
The report says that after a closer inspection of the explosive device, Greek authorities noticed burn marks, which suggest that an attempt was made to detonate the device. The report also notes that had the device exploded, serious damages would have been caused.
It is also suspected that recent adverse weather conditions may have been responsible for its failure.
There is no indication as to where the device was intended to be used, but the news service said that the relatives of a long-term prison convict, who is expected to testify in a court case, live near the area where the bomb was discovered.
Greek authorities are now investigating this strange and unprecedented case with the aim of recovering fingerprints or other evidence that could lead them to the culprits behind this strange crime.
