"The Abduction of Persephone" by Pluto, in the presence of Hermes, is the third figure which is represented on the stunning mosaic floor that was revealed several days ago at the Kasta tomb in Amphipolis.
Persephone was the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, who according to Greek mythology, was kidnapped by Hades the Lord of the Underworld.
The colorful mosaic that was recently discovered in the tomb features a chariot led by two white horses. A bearded man wearing a laurel wreath is riding the chariot, while the psychopomp god Hermes appears to be guiding the chariot to the underworld.
This new revelation, claim experts, directly links the Amphipolis tomb to the Vergina tombs, as a mural with the same theme which was also unearthed there as well.
Now that the image of Persephone is confirmed, the entire project (sized 4.5 by 3 meters) is expected to be completely restored.
As archaeologists remove more and more debris from the tomb, it is expected that more and more works of art will come to light. This recent discovery could possibly foreshadow yet another mosaic, that might be even more elaborate and impressive, and which might be unearthed in the next chamber.
