More Quakes in Cephalonia - Gov't Sends Support For Victims (VIDEO + PICS)

Cephalonians got jolted once again on Tuesday as hundreds of aftershocks have been rocking the island since the 5.9 Richter quake that shook the area on Sunday. According to reports, a strong after shock measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale frightened islanders on Tuesday with seismologists assuring residents that it was simply an aftershock and should be expected.

At the moment, more than 1,000 residents whose homes suffered some damages during the quake have found refuge are on two ferry boats that were dispatched to the island right after Sunday's quake, while hundreds of people are still refusing to enter them homes in fear and have sought comfort in their cars, or in public squares.

Schools still remain closed, while authorities are clearing public roads of rocks that tumbled down during landslides.

Meanwhile, Minister of Interior Yiannis Mihelakis said on STAR television on Tuesday morning that a support package to quake stricken citizens will be released immediately.

He also announced that the Labour Ministry has offered 100,000 Euros to the municipalities of Cephalonia and Ithaca.

At the same time, contributions to social security funds have been suspended for a period of three months while the Finance Ministry has given a three month extension for the payments of debts and tax statements to the State. Moreover, the Bank of Piraeus has also decided to help and it suspended payments by Cephalonia citizens for a period of one month while the Union of Greek Banks is to meet later on Tuesday in order to discuss other measures.
