There have been cases of vandalism reported against Christian churches in cities such as Heraklion and officials -together with the Archdiocese of Crete- are very concerned about this because the incidents are becoming more and more frequent.
Sedmitza.ru, citing the Greek agency Romphea, reported one such act of vandalism recently at the church of St. Marina near the village of Avgenika, in Heraklion.
The culprits who committed this terrible and shameful crime, followed the same steps, as in other cases of vandalism. They first removed the icons from the walls and then piled them on the altar table. After doing this, they doused the icons with some sort of flammable liquid and then unfortunately set them on fire. And if that wasn't enough, they then decided to leave their mark and began spraying graffiti writing all over the church walls in what some say was Arabic, or some other type of foreign middle eastern language.
Local residents discovered the act when they saw smoke pouring out of the church.
