At least 3,124 persons have committed suicide in Greece as a result of the economic crisis in the period 2009-2012. This obviously dramatic increase, or a shocking 37% rise, is a result of a five year recession and a repercussion of the downfall of the Greek economy. According to data, the suicides recorded in the period 2009-2011 occurred as follows (as the recession deepens as a result of the austerity measures, we also notice a rise in suicides every year).
- 2009: 677
- 2010: 830
- 2011: 927
- 2012: 690 until August 23 (this number is expected to rise by the end of 2012, and surpass the 2011 figure)
