Addressing his parliamentary group on Tuesday, leader of the Independent Greeks Movement Panos Kammenos said that his party was a force of stability in a climate marked by unreliability, and called on citizens who oppose the Memorandum to form a large anti-memorandum front with him within the framework of cancelling the Memorandum and loan agreements.
In such a framework, he outlined his party's economic program which includes a five step strategy that he suggests should be adopted by all political parties in the Greek parliament. These include:
- a formal complaint over the loan agreements
- a formal complaint over the Memorandum
- the formation of a national audit committee and cancellation of the odious debt
- the punishment of all guilty parties (politicians past and present)
- the delineation of Greece's EEZ
That is why "our party calls on all MPs in the Greek parliament" to join this effort because "we can create a majority government with a national purpose", said Kammenos. "Even MPs who were elected by other political parties that voted for the Memorandum must now reach a decision on what to do. There is no other solution for this nation at the moment. We will also clearly propose this during our meeting with the President of the Republic (Karolos Papoulias) as well".
Kammenos also said something else that was quite interesting. He told his group of MPs that he will never ask them to agree or not agree (rather dictate) on what to vote for in parliament. He said that they individually have to decide this for themselves since they serve the interests of their voters. This is indeed a first in the Greek parliament. Up until now most parliamentary MPs are told by the party leader what to vote for and what to reject. When they refuse, the party usually ousts them and they either join ranks with another party or become independent. This is also dangerous on issues of national importance, but on the overall we here at hellasfrappe believe that on certain types of legislature this would inspire many MPs to be more attentive to their duties and to actually have to answer to their voters.
