Greek officials are continuing with a rescue operation for 12 immigrants about 1.5 nautical miles off the coast of Farmakonisi. Authorities spotted a vessel transferring the illegal immigrants from Turkey about 1.5 nautical miles from this Dodecannese island.
Two immigrants jumped into the sea and the vessel capsized when Greek coast guard officials began towing the boat to safety. According to reports, officials have already pulled 16 people from the water but they are still searching for another 12 people.
The rescue operation is being supported by a Hellenic Navy vessel and Super Puma helicopter.
