The Roma couple was jailed after giving their depositions to Greek prosecutors. The "father" argued that he adopted the child from a Bulgarian Roma male, who was a friend to the child's biological mother, and stressed that if the released, he would take authorities to Maria's natural parents. He also said that he was opposed to the adoption. (Opposed to the adoption yes, but he gladly collected the child benefits for well over 5 years!)
Prosecutors filed felony charges against both the male and female (they have been charged for kidnapping, repeated false certification).
Their defense attornies asked the prosecution to change the category of kidnapping to illegal adoption but their request was immediately denied.
