MILITARY COUP? Alert After Blog Post Claims That Special Forces Want Gov't Change

The Supreme Court and the government went on full alert on Wednesday night after it was discovered that a blog post from the on the website of the Special Forces Reserve Union (KEED) said that the Greek administration has to step down right away and make way for a national unity government because it failed to live up with a constitutional pledge to provide work, health, education, justice and security for all citizens (as stipulated in Article 22 of the Greek Constitution). Specifically the statement demands that the coalition government of Antonis Samaras, as well as the President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias must resign immediately and an interim government be appointed under the "guarantee" of the Hellenic armed forces.

KEED has threatened to hold mass protests in central Athens on Saturday at 4 P.M. at Syntagma Square and has called on all Greeks to join this rally. The fifteen demands it made in its announcement include the seizure of German owned businesses in Greece until German World War II repartations are paid. In addition to the suspension of all bailout obligations, the announcement also demands that the government takes on its responsibility to protect Greece from threats in Cyprus, the Aegean, Macedonia, Epirus and Thrace and finally it also called for the deportation of illegal immigrants from Greece. Also they demand that special courts be set up to prosecute everyone who is responsible for the present Greek financial crisis .Most interestingly the posting noted that the country's armed forces will guarantee all of the above.

A prosecutor in Athens ordered an investigation into the blog post right away and prosecutors would meet again on this issue on Thursday and take a final decision on what plan of action to adopt.

Obviously this caused panic at a State level, prompting government and judicial officials to hold an emergency meeting at Supreme Court late in the night.

At the same time, prosecutors are also examining an article that was published in The Guardian recently claiming that certain elements in the Greek Army were training some squads of the Golden Dawn party.

Commenting on the issue, government spokesman Simos Kedikoglou said that the vast majority of those who serve in the Hellenic Armed Forces are committed to the Hellenic Republic and this announcement concerns a "very small" number of individuals who will "face the consequences" of their actions. This is probably why the Special Forces Reserve Union came back with a response noting that they did not expect to hear anything else, nor did they expect better treatment. The mainstream media on the other left it to be understood that military coups do not get announced they just happen.

Nonetheless, not one report on Thursday could confirm and/or deny this report. The only thing that was heard was from an official who spoke to Nikos Evangelatos on SKAI channel who noted that the rally might indeed be held. Our guess here at HellasFrappe is that they do not want this issue to take on wide dimensions, and are trying to downplay it.
