Police officials, who earlier in the week arrested five Turkish nationals in connection to a speedboat carrying arms and explosives from the island of Chios to Turkey, on Friday conducted checks at a refugee reception center in Lavrio, southeast of Athens.
During the inspection, which was conducted by the counter terrorism unit, nine Turks, nine Syrians, nine Afghans, one Iraqi and one Iranian national were taken out for further questioning.
There are currently 170 refugees housed at the center.
Reports from Turkey said earlier this week that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan called Greek Premier Antonis Samaras to congratulate him on stopping the boat, which was allegedly also carrying two members of the militant left-wing Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C), (accused of carrying out terrorist attacks in Turkey).
Three Greeks have also been arrested in connection to the speedboat.
