The Sunday edition of Real News published a peculiar story this weekend, and to be quite frank most of us here at HellasFrappe are highly skeptical about it for many, many reasons. Nonetheless, it is newsworthy so we decided to publish a few bits and pieces. The article focuses on the assassination attempt against former prime minister Costas Karamanlis, and a conversation he allegedely held with a friend about the case.
According to the article, Karamanlis is convinced that the US was (and to some degree still is) annoyed with his decision to sign an energy agreement with Russia in favor of the South Stream pipeline project.
"I don't know if they wanted to threaten my life, but I definitely believe they wanted to pressure me and they did this in every way possible," Karamanlis apparently told an associate, who asked him about the assassination attempt against his life while he was governing Greece.
The prosecution is collecting material as we speak, added the former premier "I am confident in the judiciary system," he added. RealNews speculates that Karamanlis said this because he still supports the opinion that the only way to weaken the regional superpower called Turkey was to allow Greece to evolve into a European energy hub.
Commenting on the present tripartite government, the former Prime Minister allegedly said he was optimistic and noted that "this government will last". Karamanlis is apparently in the opinion that both Evangelos Venizelos (and the PASOK party) together with Fotis Kouvelis (and the DIMAR party) will stand by the Antonis Samaras government until the end of their term. According to him, both Kouvelis and Venizelos do not desire elections.
The former prime minister is also apparently well grounded and fully aware of the hardships that many Greek families are enduring at the moment because of the reduction in their living standards. The newspaper noted that Karamanlis is fully aware that this crisis will affect the Greek economy for years, and he is fully aware that this undeniable fact cannot change, or at least for the time being it can't.
His associates apparently told RealNews that Karamanlis is also carefully monitoring the developments in PASOK. It should be reminded that PASOK had a clear majority several years ago, but is presently in fourth position and its political future is still uncertain because it has no credibility with voters at all. The primary reason PASOK is doing so poorly is because it elected George Papandreou as its leader. Papandreou succeeded Karamanlis in 2009, and the former conservative PM believes that Papandreou is highly responsible for allowing Greece to be tied 'hand and foot' to the Memorandums of shame.
"Papandreou lost valuable time, he did not adopt measures (to safeguard the Greek economy) and the only thing that mattered to him was to hurt the New Democracy party and me in particular, but ultimately he hurt this nation" Karamanlis allegedely said.
Karamanlis also apparently said that he is not interested in making a comeback.
Now, in a somewhat different situation, and certainly from a different source, we here at HellasFrappe might of just believed this story, but we are not very convinced on the credibility of Mr.Chatzinikolaoy for many, many reasons, one of which is because he was extremely critical of Karamanlis while he was in power.
The only common sense conclusion we can make from this story is that Karamanlis is a diplomat and as such would never, ever discuss diplomatic, controversial, and national issues with his associates. This is not how Karamanlis operated.
This is why we are skeptical about this story in RealNews.
So then why would RealNews report this story. Good question. The only answer we can come up with is that there are forces in Greece capitalizing on Karamanlis' silence.
Also, there are forces who are attempting to en burn the ongoing investigation over the assassination attempt against his life.
Now don't get us wrong, we are not in anyway claiming that RealNews is doing this, but certainly anyone who has followed this newspaper over the last few years would automatically realize that Chatzinikolaoy was (and still is) not really a big fan of Karamanlis, in fact conservatives, and especially those who still support Karamanlis have nicknamed Chatzinikolaoy as "Chatzilalakia" which means that he is a bla-bla-er. Or in simple English = Full of b****llshit.
Chatzinikolaoy detested Karamanlis, and we believe he always supported the Mitsotakis family (especially Dora Bakoyiannis). We also believe that he would easily flip flop anywhere if it suited his interests, and certainly this would never be in favor of Karamanlis. So obviously his decision to allow this story to be published in his newspaper has other intentions. There is certainly something else going on here and we believe that it will eventually unfold in the weeks and months to come. We will nonetheless follow this story and keep you posted.
