The State audit committee which is conducting a thorough investigation into this period has discovered millions and millions of Euros that were squandered by its elite Committee and how unfortunately all of this is now going to be paid by the stupid Greek tax payer!
A small sample of the investigation was presented in an article in the Real News newspaper at the weekend and indeed is quite shocking.
According to the report, executives and general managers not only received humongous (and scandalous) salaries but they even had the audacity to charge other incomprehensible expenses to the State as well.
Each one of these Golden Boys were awarded with a credit card and depending on their rank were given a credit line that ranged anywhere from 8,211 to 24,994 Euros but almost every single one of them surpassed their credit lines and most cards were in almost 51.3326 Euros. In other words, they did not use these credit cards for business expenses but rather to purchase expensive gifts for themselves and their loved ones!
At the same time, the organizing committee admitted that it was even handing out money for their living expenses.
For example in one case it was paying out 2935 Euros a month in rent for a house in the Filothei area where one of its Golden Boys resided (aside from his fat salary of course).
At the same time the committee also paid 4,000 Euros a month in rent for a home in Kastri (another posh area in northern Athens) for an adviser who apparently specialized in the area of design and implementation of the Olympic Games safety program, but who was also given a whopping 1.3 million Euros for his services.
Talk about the squandering of funds!
The organizing committee of 2004 not only set Greek tax payers in debt for years, but all these executives -or Golden Boys- were hired without public notice and/or proper recruitment.
Their salaries ranged anywhere from 31,000 Euros to 117,388 Euros but as we said earlier they were also given extra money for their accommodations, food, travel and mobile telephones. Just the travel costs, and use of company cars during the Olympic games alone totaled more than 4,668,292 Euros, imagine how much money was squandered until then.
Our favorite example of course is the Italian-Greek from Kallithea. Apparently the committee hired an expatriate from Italy who supposedly came to Greece ahead of the games to coordinate the Torchbearers and who was given a fat salary of 4,200 Euros a month! The committee also apparently paid for her airfare and gave her a further 4,000 Euros to cover her basic needs while in our country. The only trouble is that the investigation discovered that this ex patriot was a permanent resident of Kallithea!
And aside from literally raping Greek people's pockets, the Organizing Committee also loved to entertain. It charged up lavish dinner parties, caviar and champagne receptions, as well as cocktail parties for friends and unrelated personalities from companies that were arranging the events of the Games.
