The unions representing judges, magistrates and judicial staff on Monday called for a walk-off from courtrooms between 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.. The protest is expected to continue until September 30. The move comes in opposition to projected salary cuts for the judiciary, with a union representing prosecutors expected to join the mobilisations. According to the state news agency the action also foresees no work beyond normal business hours, with prosecutors expected to avoid tabling recommendations to judicial councils, except for criminal cases.
The judges΄ associations said in a statement that they are determined to defend their current wages and will not tolerate the downgrading of the judges. They added that they have already seen their salaries reduced by as much as 38 percent and have warned that relentless pay cuts were putting their constitutional position as guarantors of the court system under threat. "We call on the state not to forget that it has the obligation of protecting the personal and operational independence of judges," the group of associations said.
Meanwhile, unions representing state hospital doctors on Monday also called for a work stoppage, with an exception on emergency cases. This action also comes in reaction to the planned salary cuts in the public health sector.
