New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras on Tuesday presented a twelve step program to combat crime and illegal immigration.
- Change in legislation regarding the aresst and conviction of offenders.
- Change policing methods so that they do not place human lives in danger.
- Use of Water Cannon/Riot vehicles during protests
- More policing in neighborhoods 1) by altering bureaucratic procedures, 2) by unifying police forces
- 3)by employing helicopters for filming events.
- Consolidate and strengthen police headquarters against organized crime
- Change the whole way of dealing with crime. “Clemency” has led to impunity. Those found guilty of heavy crimes should remain in prison for longer.
- Relieve pressure from prisons.
- Illegal aliens who turn convicts will be deported
- Prison facilities that are ready should be placed into operation immediately
- Change the whole prison code, break up illegal organizations
- Combat so called low crime, which is the forerunner of major crime. Remove drug users from places in cities which they have occupied.
- Creation of a national security doctrine which will begin with threats against public safety and reach preventive mechanisms over the long-term.
On the subject of illegal immigration Samaras said that his government plans a better patrolling of borders with physical barriers such as the fences in Evros and use of technology like infrared cameras which notify authorities. Better cooperation with FRONTEX is also a must.
- Creation of detention centers where those crossing the borders and arrested for crimes will be taken immediately.
- European-wide initiative the creation of a single asylum policy in Southern Europe on the repatriation of illegal immigrants. While he also said that the European Union should also clarify the issue with Turkey and that Greece will raise this issue as a condition for Turkey's bid into the EU.
- Strike at illegal trade and black market which is the biggest money-making industry by illegal immigrants.
Samaras also said that he is going to abolish the Ragousis law that made the country a magnet for illegal immigrants and human trafficking. Those caught will be repatriated, and this will discourage others from attempting to enter the country, he added.
