24-year Old Student Charged With Homicide For Defending His Home Against Burglar

The 24-year-old medical student was charged with voluntary manslaughter on Friday in relation to the shooting death of an Albanian national who attempted to invade his home in the eastern Attica prefecture of Paiania.

The student was charged with fatally wounding a 43-year-old Albanian national. An Athens prosecutor filed the charge with the extenuating circumstance that the man was acting while in the "heat of the moment" (ab irato).

In his initial statement, the 24-year-old, a veterinary student in Hungary, said he unintentionally fired his shotgun while chasing a trio of unknown men who had broken into at least three residences in the early morning hours of Thursday. His attorneys also said their client believed previous shotgun fire from the same neighbourhood emanated from the burglars. According to reports, another neighbourhood resident fired into the air to ward off a trio of robbers, believed to be the same men.

The 24-year-old also told authorities he recognized the victim as one of three men that broke into his home and attempted to rob it twice in the same night as well as threatened to kill his mother in a bid to force her to turn off an activated alarm.

He also expressed remorse for shooting the man, but this was not enough, he was still charged with homicide. If during his trial he is found guilty this innocent boy might be slapped with 20 years.

Editor's Note - What a shame... all he did was defend his home and his family.
