Filled Under: BALKANS, KARAMANLIS, TURKEY
According to a report in Turkey's Hurriyet Daily News, Ankara is getting set to endorse FYROM's, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro's, as well as Georgia’s bid to join the NATO alliance at the upcoming summit on May 20-21 in Chicago. Although the 2012 summit is not planning to focus on enlargement, Turkey will nonetheless urge allies to make commitments that the invitations to join the alliance would be offered at the next summit.
Turkey believes that these Balkan countries should join NATO, because this would in its opinion this is the only way to maintain peace and stability in the region because it is concerned that ethnic tension might flare up in the future.
Overjoyed with the news, FYROM Foreign Minister Nikola Poposki is due in Ankara on Tuesday where he will hold talks on the issue of integration with Turkish officials. Although it seems hard to overcome a Greek veto, Turkey is apparently still determined to raise the issue during the summit.
Where does Athens -and its government- stand on all of this?
Simple... it is presently busy pulling its eyes out.
Editor's Note - Thank You Costas Karamanlis!!!! You were the only MAN, with a capital "M", that actually had the courage to block this from happening, let us hope that Turkish efforts die out quickly. No accession until the issue of the name is resolved FIRST!
