The buzz of the day is news concerning the extension of the exploration areas in the North Aegean. Indeed miracles can happen, according to reports the state (together with the Energean Company) plan to extend the exploration areas for hydrocarbons that are currently being exploited by the Prinos company. This is a very important development because it is the first time since the 1970's that such a license is ever issued by the Greek state in an area that in 1987 caused tension between Greece and Turkey. As some may recall, Turkey attempted to take hold of this area in the late 80s with the result being the formation of an "agreement" that did not allow Greece or Turkey to proceed in issuing drilling permits here.

A report on the military site defencenet said that US officials have been informed about this initiative and according to them are encouraging Greek authorities to move ahead with this project as quickly as possible since they are certain about the deposits that are found there.

The specifics are still not known about this initiative but it is suspected that drilling rights will be given near the "Epsilon" deposit while the goal is to get closer to the Babouris area which caused the crisis in 1987 with Turkey.

Experts estimate that the untapped deposits near the "Epsilon" area contain reserves of about 18 million barrels and according to what was reported there is data that proves that this number can even double!

The real game, in any case, is going to be played in the eastern part of the Aegean near the Thracian Sea, or around the islands of Thasos, Samothrace, Lemnos and Imbros, where, according to the same experts, there are rich deposits similar to those found in the Eastern Mediterranean. The fact that the first three islands belong to Greece while the fourth belongs to Turkey, demonstrates the difficulty in how officials will go about exploiting these deposits - of which have already been "eyed" by oil giant Shell.

The map that accompanies this article was featured on defencenet, and according to them is from Shell, and displays the areas that will be explored.
