The humble decision from two mayors in southern Italy tp donate their salaries to help the Greek people in this difficult crisis can only be characterized as generous and very touching. Today it has captivated the attention of the media as well as touched the hearts by millions of citizens in Greece. Italian mayors Marco Gkalnti from the town of Cava Dei Tireni outside of Salerno in southern Italy and Giovanni Moskatielo of Baronisi said they decided to waive their salaries (1,100 and 780 euros respectively) in support of the Greek people and in such a framework they sent a formal letter to their prime minister and to other EU officials explaining why.
In the joint letter to their own premier Mario Monti, to the President of the European Parliament, Jose Manuel Barroso, to interim Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos and to German socialist leader Martin Schultz, the mayors made it a point that the EU must and is obligated to support Greece during this difficult time.
On his part, Marco Gkalnti, who is a professor at the Law School of Salerno said: "Europe is being tested and the abandonment of Greece means abandonment of European ideals... the only ideals we love and want." He also explained that this move is symbolic and requested that other European citizens and politicians follow suit.
Giovanni Moskatielo, said that "those who ruled Greece have certainly committed serious mistakes, but will now be equally responsible, unless we support -by any means possible- this country, which is the cradle of our civilization".
