Responding to questions on Turkey`s provocative action in the Eastern Mediterranean relating to Cyprus, US State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki said on Monday that the Washington recognises the right of the Republic of Cyprus to develop its resources in its exclusive economic zone, but they should be shared between the two communities.
"We recognise the right of the Republic of Cyprus to develop its resources within its exclusive economic zone. We continue to believe that the natural gas and oil reserves of the island, as well as all its resources, must be fairly shared between the two communities in the framework of a comprehensive settlement," she said.She also noted that it was important to avoid activities which could increase tension in the region and reiterated US support for UN efforts to reunite Cyprus in a bizonal bicommunal federation.
