GOOD - Supreme Court Launches Investigation Into Why Greek Mayors Are Refusing Audits

Supreme Court Prosecutor Efterpi Koutzamani launched a preliminary investigation into why specific Greek mayors have been refusing to check the backgrounds of their public sector employees (certificates, diplomas, credentials, etc), whose contracts have been converted from fixed-term to indefinite.

The five municipalities that suspiciously refuse to cooperate with auditors are the area of Halandri (a suburb in northern Athens), the area of Nikea (a suburb in Piraeus), the area of Zografou in central Athens, the city of Larisa in central Greece and the city of Patras in the Peloponnese.

(It should be noted that three of these five mayors were fully supported by SYRIZA -surprise, surprise- at the recent municiple elections, one was backed by DIMAR -another radical Leftist party- and the last one was supported from the Greek Communist Party of Greece. In other words, all five mayors are backed from radical Leftists groups who we all know only want to cause chaos throughout the country).

According to press reports, the prosecutor wants to find out whether or not these mayors have committed the offenses of breach of trust and misconduct.

As a result, Koutzamani forwarded the related files that were sent by the Minister of Administrative Reform Kyriakos Mitsotakis last week to various prosecution authorities in Athens, Piraeus, Patras and Larissa.

Mitsotakis apparently sent the files of these (five) mayors to the country's top court because they refused to implement an evaluation scheme for civil servants, in a move likely to strain even further relations between the government and municipal officials.

The Minister had also warned that prosecutors would soon look into the files of all of those who resist the plan, while he also slammed SYRIZA backed Attica Governor Rena Dourou for actually supporting these mayors.

In fact SYRIZA has rejected the Ministry’s move with regard to permanent contracts, arguing that all the municipal employees be allowed to maintain their positions given that they had since been working for the municipalities for the past 10 years, regardless of their credentials of course.

In a statement that was released last week and which supported the mayors, SYRIZA even said that the it would provide "political" backing to the mayors and even accused Mitsotakis of conducting a witch hunt.
