As archaeologists continue with their excavations in Amphipolis, more and more incredible works of art are being revealed. At the weekend, the Greek Ministry of Culture released photos of a stunning mosaic floor that was discovered in the second chamber of the tomb.
The Ministry said that the colourful mosaic was skillfully created from small colored pebbles and shows a chariot in motion.
Without a doubt, the mosaic reveals the exquisite skill in portraying details of the figures, the horses and the colours.
The central theme is surrounded by a decorative frame, 0,60m wide, which features a double meander, squares and a spiral shape.
This amazing work of art, covers the whole floor of the second chamber or 4.5 meters width by 3 meters in length. The full extension of this work of art has not yet been fully revealed by the archaeologists.
As noted in the photos, the center of the mosaic is still full of sand. The archaeologists claim that this is because it was destroyed, however many parts have been found in the dirt that they are sifting through and they will soon begin piecing it back together. Parallel to this, they are looking for pieces that have not yet been discovered.
In other related news, the Culture ministry believes that the third chamber will be fully cleaned by the end of next week, and when this occurs then more mysteries will be resolved.
As we speak, the soil in the relevant chamber is one and a half meters in front of the third gate and it is much higher in the third chamber itself and scientists are pulling up a sweat to remove it. When the complete this phase, the second chamber is going to reveal two marble slabs of the roof that have yet to be found, while the third is expected to reveal the stairs and a small gate.
(It is believed that there is a gate at the end of the staircase which leads to the burial chamber).
Currently the excavation team is propping the third chamber and making it secure. This is why they have yet to release any pictures, but they are reassuring that as soon as everything is secure, the excavation of the fourth chamber will commence.

"The central theme is a chariot in motion, pulled by two white horses and driven by a bearded man, crowned with a laurel wreath," the ministry said in a statement.Hermes, the messenger of the Gods, is pictured in front of the chariot.
