The southern coast of the Aegean island of Crete apparently experienced two earthquakes on Sunday, one in the early morning hours and a second around mid-day. An announcement from the Athens Planetarium's Geodynamics Institute said that the earthquake recorded measured 4.2 on the Richter scale and occurred under the sea bed off the southern city of Ierapetra at 01:08. The epicenter was 5 km southeast of Ierapetra, and no damages were reported on land.
The second earthquake struck at 15:05 in the Tymbaki area, which is located southwest of Ierapetra, measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale (earlier reports by the Institute assessed it at 4.8). The quake's epicenter was under the seabed off Tymbaki, which lies about 45 km southwest of Crete's largest city, Heraklio, where it was strongly felt.
In both quakes, no injuries or damages were reported.
