Unlike some politicians who gladly accepted funds which they claimed were for heating, a parents association in northern Greece rightfully turned down a donation of heating oil by the Open Society Foundations, which is a charity network funded by billionaire George Soros. In a statement that was released on Thursday, the parents association from Naoussa said that covering the schools' heating needs was an obligation of the state and then rightfully questioned the motives behind the contribution from Soros.

The fund recently announced it would donate an unspecified amount of oil to the local municipality to keep the classrooms warm. Following a decision by local authorities, schools were recently closed in Florina, Naoussa, Drama, Kozani and Kastoria in protest at the lack of heating subsidies.
"We are not convinced this is a selfless offer,” Manolis Galitis, head of the parent associations was quoted as telling Makedonia newspaper.
“We are convinced that from this ‘benefaction’ Mr Soros expects something in return and we would not like to see our children’s schools get involved in such a game,” he said according to reports.
