MPs Slam Turkish intransigence, Arrogance & Interests In Cyprus

Cyprus Minister of Defence Photis Photiou said at the weekend that efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus problem are hindered by Turkey’s intransigence, arrogance and interests, which has supported the illegal regime in the occupied areas and has created conditions fostering the division of the island. Injustice continues to haunt our country and the people of Cyprus still suffer as a result of the Turkish invasion, he said.

Photiou further referred to the pillaged churches, the usurped properties, the cultural destruction and the enclaved still living in the occupied areas saying that all the above elements underscore a war crime unfortunately left unpunished.

Despite difficulties and a composite geopolitical environment formulated by the crisis, he assured that the government is working collectively in order to overcome any existing problems.

     “The government seeks the resumption of Cyprus talks with a view to finding a solution through a consensus of all political forces and the formulation of a common national strategy”, he said.

Photiou said that despite pessimistic predictions and the other side’s denial to go ahead with moves which would reinforce the process with no cost but rather would benefit the Turkish Cypriot community, the government is committed to have a positive stance and to do its utmost for a successful outcome.

The latest round of UN-backed talks was suspended in July 2012 as a result of Turkey’s reaction to the fact that Cyprus assumed the EU Council Presidency between July and December 2012.  — Copyright © Famagusta Gazette 2013.
