Orthodox Christianity has a history of building its churches and monasteries in inhospitable places and we see this all over Greece as well as other areas of the world but did you know that we also have a Church on King George Island? No... we are not referring to an island in the exotic Caribbean, but rather to the southernmost place in the world! Holy Trinity was built near Bellingshausen Station, Russia's permanent outpost in Antarctica.
The church was built in the 1990s by the Russian Orthodox Church and transported by a supply ship to its present location. One or two monks from Troitse-Sergiyeva Lavra actually volunteer to man this church year-round.
While most of buildings on this continent are built to hug the ground in order to reduce their exposure to the ice polar wind, the Holy Trinity Church proudly stands tall at some 15 meters. As you can see in the photos, it is a wooden structure which is apparently constructed from Siberian pine and can bear harsh weather conditions.
