Greece's Neo-Poor Seek Refuge in Psychiatric Wards
An incredible report was published on Sunday in To ProtoThema which claims that many citizens who have suffered greatly as a result of the Greek crisis and the austerity cuts dictated in the Memorandum are now seeking refuge at major psychiatric wards. "If we do not take care of them, they will choose the same method (of killing themselves as the 77yo retiree) Dimitris Christoulas did, who ended his life outside the parliament building due to financial problems," Michalis Giannakis, chairman of employees at the Dromokaiteio Psychiatric Hospital, told protothema.gr. According to him, there have been a number of people who have/ar threatened-ing to kill themselves if the institution refuses to host them. He made it clear that these people are not addicts, are not suffering from chronic psychological problems, but are just desperate people who have lost everything due to the economic crisis. "These people do not seek medication from us, but just a plate of food and a place to sleep at night" said Christoulas. According to him, approximately 20 "neo-poor" each month seek refuge at Dromokaiteio hospital.
Tragedy....
