US ambassador Intervenes Following Tsipras' Interview On enikos.gr

A recent statement by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on notorious November 17 terrorist Savvas Xiros apparently caused the intervention of US Ambassador to Athens David Pearce.

It should be recalled that on Monday night and while speaking on enikos.gr and journalist Nikos Chatzinikolaou, Tsipras denied that the law abolishing high security prisons, which included a provision which would allow convicted terrorist Savvas Xiros to serve the rest of his multiple life sentence from his home, has affected the relations between Greece and the U.S.

Asked whether the law which was approved by Parliament and prompted the angry reaction of the U.S. government was a mistake which could affect Greek negotiations, he said:
"This friction, the intense disagreement [with the U.S.] which took place has not influenced the negotiations." During the interview Tsipras said Greece had been convicted by the European Court of Human Rights for detaining Xiros who is severely disabled.
Following Tsipras statement, and while replying to a tweet by Financial Times journalist Peter Spiegel, who uploaded the relevant video, Pearce said that ‘Xiros should not set foot out of prison before his sentences are served’.
