Villages Around Evros River Evacuated Because Of Flood Threat

Following a decision by local officials due to recent flooding in the area, the villages of Lagina and Poros located near the River Evros in northern Greece were evacuated and local residents have been transferred to the town of Soufli.

The embankment embracing the river gave through and as result the village of Lagina suffered flooding, with many more villages nearby facing a similar threat.

Local authorities have already begun digging dikes and taking other measures to prevent further flooding, but nonetheless decided to evacuate a few villages to avoid any more chaos.

The Governor of Eastern Macedonia & Thrace, George Pavlidis, told reporters on Thursday that so far this year, the rainfall and floods have been unprecedented, and noted that 2,850 cubic meters of water are gushing into the river from Feres every second.
