Central & W.Macedonia in below-zero temperatures - Weather fierce in Europe

Central and West Macedonia has been hit by below-freezing temperatures over the weekend, while it has been snowing since Friday night throughout the Florina prefecture. On Saturday night it was also snowing heavily in the northern cities of Edessa, Kastoria and Kozani.

According to the state news agency, temperatures dropped to minus 5 (-5C) in Florina, -4C in Grevena, -3C in Kastoria and Kozani, -2C in Kilkis and -1C in Thessaloniki, with ice creating problems in sections of the Florina-Kastoria national highway and of the Florina-Kastoria road, where cars need chains to circulate.

On the subject of motorways, Egnatia Road circulation is proceeding as normal.

The scene is more tragic in Europe. Snow and icy weather swept through parts of Europe on Saturday, stranding drivers overnight and leaving thousands of homes without power in Britain.

According to the Associated Press, Many motorists in Britain were forced to abandon their cars or were trapped in vehicles for hours after becoming snowed in. In fact northern England welcomed 11 centimeters of snow!

In France, traffic jams snarled many of this country's major highways, with more than three-quarters of the country under severe weather watch.

In Germany, snow and ice led to a roughly 20-kilometer traffic jam on the A8 highway near Stuttgart. Moreover, parts of Germany's south and west saw more than 10 centimeters of fresh snow, helping some ski areas which had been struggling.
