Huge Rise In Tourist Arrivals To Greece & Revenues

Tourism revenues jumped 28% reaching 900 million Euros in January-April 2014, while tourist arrivals increased 21%, compared with the same period last year, exceeding 1.9 million, the Bank of Greece (in Greek) said in an announcement.

According to its figures, tourist arrivals from the EU 28 reached 1,022 million, up to 23% compared with the same period in 2013 and arrivals from third countries increased 19% to 893,000, while arrivals from eurozone countries increased 15%.

Finally arrivals from other EU countries increased 33%.

More specifically, arrivals from France dropped 9%, while arrivals from Germany and the UK increased 15% and 44% respectively. But certainly the greatest influx of tourist arrivals are from Russia since the period under review noted an increase in the area of 54%. Arrivals from the United States also rose by 24% at 58,000.

Concerning tourism revenues, the biggest increase, 32% at 412 million Euros, was recorded from countries outside the EU 28; tourism revenues from EU 28 countries increased 25% to 446 million Euros, as opposed to the same period in 2013.

On the subject of tourist arrivals, it is worth noting that Greece has become the third destination for cruises in Europe, with 4.6 million passengers and 15% share in 2013. According to a Cruise Lines International Association-Europe report, direct economic contribution of cruise in Greece amounted to 574 million Euros (ranked seventh in Europe) and 11,000 jobs.

Popular destinations are Santorini, Mykonos and Corfu. Piraeus ranked fifth among the principal home ports in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.
